Monitor Placement Ergonomics: A Measurement-Based Desk Setup Guide
Where the screen goes, how far it sits, and how to adapt the ranges to your body, your screen, and your work — with sources.
Most monitor-placement advice gives you a number and moves on. The number is usually fine — and usually incomplete. The right position for your screen depends on your seated eye height, the size of the display, whether you wear progressive lenses, how the screen is used, and whether the desk moves. A guide that hands everyone the same measurement gets it wrong for someone.
This guide takes the opposite approach: it gives you the ranges and anchors that institutional ergonomics guidance actually uses, explains why sources phrase them differently, and shows you how to adjust for your own setup. Everything here is about positioning — comfort and sensible arrangement — not medical treatment. This is not medical advice, and no setup on this page promises to prevent or cure any condition.
Why There Is No Single Correct Number
The most important thing to understand comes from Cornell University's ergonomics group, whose workstation checklist states that specific dimensional constraints are intentionally omitted in favor of a principles-oriented approach — because recommending fixed dimensions without knowing each user's body proportions, equipment, and work leads to poor arrangements. The same source notes there is no "perfect posture for all time" and that changing posture can reduce stress and redistribute pressure associated with long-duration static positions.
That is why this page gives you recommended ranges and anchors, a procedure for verifying them at your own desk, and explicit "adjust if…" guidance — not one universal measurement. Where authoritative sources phrase things differently, we show both phrasings and explain the difference.
Measurement 1: Monitor Height and Your Eye Line
Current OSHA guidance (computer-workstations eTools) gives the primary practical rule: position the monitor directly in front of you with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, so the center of the screen sits normally about 15-20 degrees below horizontal eye level — your gaze angles gently downward to the screen's center.
Stanford EH&S guidance supports the same anchor ("approximately eye level") and pairs it with an arm's-length viewing distance. Cornell's workstation checklist takes a principles-oriented approach instead: it deliberately omits fixed dimensions and evaluates whether the arrangement lets your body — with your proportions, equipment, and tasks — work in a balanced position, because one fixed number cannot fit every combination of person, screen, and task.
One older tip from Cornell's 12-tips page places the top of the monitor casing 2-3 in (5-8 cm) above eye level. That is an older, differently anchored rule of thumb — it does not become equivalent to the screen-top guidance through bezel geometry, and this guide does not treat it as such. If you use it as a rough starting estimate, verify with the gaze check below.
The working test: your gaze to the screen's center angles gently downward (OSHA: normally about 15-20 degrees below horizontal eye level), and your head stays balanced over your shoulders. If you tilt your chin up to reach the middle of the screen, it is too high; if your head drops forward to read the top line, it is too low.
Measurement 2: Viewing Distance
OSHA guidance sets the preferred viewing distance at 20-40 inches (about 50-100 cm). Cornell and Stanford offer a practical rule of thumb that approximates it: sit at arm's length from the monitor.
Within that range, fine-tune around readability, posture, and the size of your display and its text: you should read the screen without leaning in, interact without your shoulders rounding forward, and keep text sharp at your usual working distance. The functional checks are:
- You can read the screen without leaning in
- You are not reaching forward to interact, shoulders rounded
- Text remains sharp at your usual working distance
Measurement 3: Screen Angle and Tilt
OSHA guidance states that the display should be perpendicular to your line of sight, usually with no more than 10-20 degrees of tilt — and adds a practical caveat: tilting the screen backward can increase reflections from overhead lighting. Glare control comes first in placement: OSHA's checklist directs that the display be positioned perpendicular to windows, with light sources considered before accessories.
Those are placement guidelines, not a universal exact setting — adjust the tilt until reflections disappear and the full screen reads comfortably without head movement, staying within the perpendicular-to-line-of-sight principle.
Centered or Offset?
OSHA guidance is direct: place the monitor directly in front of you, with the keyboard centered on the same line. For a single-monitor setup, the screen belongs in front of your seated position — not angled toward a corner because that is where the desk happens to sit.
The main exception is task-driven: if you spend hours on paper documents or a secondary device and only glance at the screen, centering the primary work surface may matter more. Centering the display is the default; offset it deliberately, for a reason, not accidentally.
For multiple monitors, OSHA's evaluation guidance applies: the primary monitor goes directly in front of you, additional monitors sit beside it, and where use is divided evenly the monitors sit next to each other within a comfortable viewing angle, minimizing head movement (Figure 3).
Laptops: The Built-In Compromise
Cornell's guidance is blunt about laptops: the design is inherently problematic — when the screen is at a comfortable height and distance, the keyboard is not, and vice versa. For sustained laptop work, the guidance is to attach an external monitor, an external keyboard (or both), and optionally a docking station — then arrange the workspace properly.
Practical implication: an integrated laptop screen and keyboard prevent the screen and input from being positioned independently. For sustained work, Cornell's guidance is to consider a stand with an external monitor and/or a separate keyboard and mouse (optionally a docking station), so screen and input can each be placed correctly. Stanford's guidance supports the same arrangement. Cornell also frames exposure by duration: ergonomic arrangement is advisable beyond about one hour of daily use, and should be implemented without delay beyond about four hours — that threshold framing is Cornell's, not a universal urgency standard.
Adapting the Ranges: "Adjust If…"
All of the above are starting ranges. Adjust them when your situation differs:

A Five-Step Setup Procedure You Can Run at Your Desk
- Sit in your normal working posture first. Feet supported, back supported, shoulders relaxed — the chair is the reference point for everything else
- Find your eye line. Look straight ahead and note where your gaze lands on a helper's hand, a sticky note, or the wall behind the screen — that height is your anchor
- Position the screen to the anchor. Top of the active screen at or slightly below eye level, so the screen center sits about 15-20 degrees below horizontal eye line; centered on your task
- Set the distance. Roughly arm's length; then adjust in or out until text is sharp and your shoulders stay relaxed
- Run the checks. Gaze reaches screen center without chin-up or head-drop; no glare; nothing on the screen requires leaning; microbreak reminders set — Cornell's checklist treats frequent short breaks as part of the arrangement, not an afterthought

Common Mistakes
- Stacking the laptop flat on the desk. The screen drops far below any reasonable eye line; raise it and add an external keyboard (see the laptop section)
- Chasing one exact number from a random article. Sources anchor differently and your body differs from the author's; run the checks instead
- Positioning around the desk instead of the person. The desk shape is not an ergonomic constraint; a monitor arm or repositioned workspace usually solves it
- Ignoring glare during setup. A perfectly placed screen you cannot read is not placed correctly — check glare before finalizing
- Setting once and never again. Chairs, screens, prescriptions, and desks change; re-run the procedure after any change
- Treating discomfort as a setup-only problem. Persistent discomfort deserves professional attention; this guide arranges furniture, it does not diagnose anything
Monitor Placement Checklist
- Seated in normal working posture before any measurement
